Diagnostic characters
- First two pairs of legs much longer and heavier than the rear two
- Legs held laterally, allowing sideways and backward movement
- Flattened, angular abdomen, often broadest at the rear
- White, yellow, pink, or green coloration matching flowers
- Sits motionless for long periods with front legs spread
Habitat and seasonality
Flower heads, foliage, bark, leaf litter, and occasionally exterior walls. Rarely established indoors.
Active spring through autumn, peaking with regional bloom periods.
Medical significance
None of consequence. Bites are extremely rare and produce only transient local irritation.
Color change
Misumena vatia females can shift between white and yellow over roughly ten to twenty-five days by secreting or reabsorbing an ommochrome pigment in the outer cell layer of the cuticle. The change is slower toward yellow than back to white and is triggered by visual input from the substrate.
Prey selection
Thomisids routinely subdue bees, wasps, and butterflies substantially larger than themselves. This is possible because the venom acts rapidly on insect neuromuscular targets and because the enlarged raptorial forelegs immobilize prey during the bite. The family is therefore a recurring subject in studies of pollinator predation risk and floral visitation behavior.
