Tetragnathidae

Long-jawed orb weavers build horizontal or steeply inclined orb webs, usually over water or in moist vegetation, and have strikingly elongated bodies and chelicerae. When disturbed they stretch their legs along a stem and become nearly invisible.

Diagnostic characters

  • Very long chelicerae, especially in males, projecting forward
  • Elongate, slender, often silvery or greenish abdomen
  • Rests stretched lengthwise along a grass stem with legs extended fore and aft
  • Web has an open hole at the hub
  • Strongly associated with streams, ponds, and marsh edges

Habitat and seasonality

Emergent vegetation at pond and stream margins, marshes, irrigation channels, and shaded moist woodland.

Populations track aquatic insect emergence, peaking early to mid summer.

Medical significance

None documented.

Aquatic subsidy

Tetragnathid density is a well-established proxy for the flux of emergent aquatic insects into riparian zones. Because the family concentrates biomass derived from stream productivity, it is used as an indicator taxon in studies of aquatic-terrestrial energy transfer and in assessments of stream health.

Cryptic posture

The resting posture of Tetragnatha, with legs I, II, and IV extended forward and backward along a stem, breaks up the spider's outline so effectively that the animal reads visually as part of the plant. This is the primary reason a family that can be locally abundant is so rarely noticed.
