Sparassidae

Huntsman spiders are large, flattened, fast, laterigrade hunters adapted to living in narrow crevices under bark and in structures. In the United States the family is represented mainly by the introduced Heteropoda venatoria in the Gulf states and the native Olios in the Southwest.

Diagnostic characters

  • Legs oriented laterally and twisted so the spider moves crab-fashion
  • Body strongly flattened for crevice occupation
  • Very large leg span relative to body size
  • Extremely rapid, often sideways, movement when disturbed
  • Flat, papery egg sac guarded by the female

Habitat and seasonality

Under loose bark, in palm fronds, banana shipments, garages, sheds, and warm structures in Florida, the Gulf Coast, Texas, and southern California.

Year-round in frost-free areas; introductions further north are transient and do not establish.

Medical significance

Low. A defensive bite from a large individual is painful and may produce local swelling, but there is no established systemic toxicity in North American species.

Introduction pathways

Heteropoda venatoria is a pantropical species distributed globally by shipping, historically in banana and produce cargo. Established United States populations are confined to frost-free regions. Specimens intercepted in northern states are almost always single individuals arriving with freight and do not indicate a local population.

Crevice adaptation

The combination of a dorsoventrally flattened body and laterigrade legs allows huntsman spiders to occupy gaps only a few millimetres deep. This is also why they appear suddenly on walls and ceilings inside buildings, having emerged at night from behind trim, siding, or cabinetry.
