Latrodectus species distribution (United States)

Native Latrodectus species occupy distinct overlapping ranges across the United States: L. mactans (southeast), L. variolus (northeast), L. hesperus (west), L. bishopi (central Florida), plus the introduced and now widespread L. geometricus.

Range overlap and identification

Where ranges overlap, species-level identification of US widows often requires examination of female epigynum or hourglass coloration pattern; danger profile is comparable across native species.
