What the literature shows
Rick Vetter and colleagues have published extensively on the gap between presumed and verified Loxosceles bites in regions without established populations. The pattern is consistent: presumed cases are common, verified cases are rare.
MRSA presents with features patients and clinicians associate with 'recluse bites': a painful lesion, central necrosis, surrounding erythema. The misattribution can delay appropriate antibiotic therapy.
