Mechanism
Spiderlings climb to an elevated point, raise the abdomen, and release multiple fine silk threads. Both wind currents and the local atmospheric potential gradient provide lift, as shown in Morley and Robert (2018).
Ballooning explains the rapid recolonization of cleared land and the appearance of spiders on islands, ships, and high-altitude balloons.
